2019 Programme Pilot Impact report

Botswana Scholars is a new programme founded by Dr Goitseone Lucy Hopkins. Lucy completed her PhD at the School of Medicine at Cardiff University, where she was one of The Brilliant Club's first PhD tutors in Wales. As well as her academic career, Lucy has worked in several roles as a health professional, including as a biomedical scientist in the NHS and as a research scientist.

In 2018, Lucy was invited to join the AccessEd incubator and began work on designing and piloting BW Scholars, a new university access programme in her home country of Botswana. BW Scholars is being supported by Botswana International University of Science and Technology.

The mission of BW Scholars is to support young people from under-served communities to access university. It does this by recruiting, training and placing postgraduate researchers to Primary, Junior and Senior schools including Orphanages.
